Just wanted to get some ideas on what people thought of these diets. I frankly think that b/c of the lack of carbs in these two diets, it leaves NO energy to do any exercise!! I tried South Beach for lie 3 days and failed horribly b/c I didn't even have enouhg energy to swim or lift!!!

Re: South Beach/ Atkins Diets
Wed, July 14, 2004 - 10:41 PMI live with a dietetics major. I personally have no opinion one way or the other since my difficulty is gaining, not loosing weight, but I can channel my girlfriend's thoughts on the subject:
The Atkins diet is ridiculous. Studies have shown that two diets containing the same amounts of calories but one with a lowered level of carbohydrates caused no weight loss. The only function of the Atkins diet, that I can see, is to eliminate half the food on the planet, thereby making it harder to eat, and thereby decreasing your caloric intake. However the dangers associated with a diet so high in fats and cholesterol, and low in starches and fiber hardly justify the results.
I recommend that people simply eat less overall, and exercise regularly. It's trite advice that we've all heard before, and not nearly as fun as counting carbs, but it's true. Burn more calories than you take in, that's all there is to it.
I don't know about the South Beach one, but from the sound of it I can't see her liking it either. She's not big on diets that put you through hell. -

Re: South Beach/ Atkins Diets
Fri, July 16, 2004 - 5:24 AMThat is an awesome reccomendation to eat less and exercise more, but it is very hard to sell that on commercials or in a box. Most Americans want the "quick-fix", and your thoughts would actually make them have to get off their butts and do something. Sounds like it would take an extremely talented marketing firm to get that diet going!!
